Deacon Ministry

Deacon Dedication - November 17, 2024

What Do Deacons Do?

Studies of the Greek word for “deacon” link it with the concept of a waiter, someone who does the practical job of serving and cleaning up afterwards. Deacons at the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren go far beyonds that type of service to assist in a variety of ways.
  • Deacons make arrangements for communion and baptisms.
  • They providie support and assistance to those who are suffering in illness or other unfortunate circumstances.
  • Deacons are also available to assist the Pastor when called upon for spiritual ministry, visitation, home communion, and anointing.
The church membership is divided into 15 groups called “clusters.”  Each cluster is assigned to a Deacon or Cluster Leader. In working with a cluster, the Deacon or Cluster Leader has three primary tasks:
  • To keep in touch with the people in their cluster to learn of any specific needs
  • To uphold those in their cluster in their prayers

To provide practical care when necessary Being called as a Deacon indicates our congregation’s confidence in our own faith and commitment to Christ, and deacons accept this opportunity to serve the congregation as an honor. If you have a spiritual need, contact the church office and a deacon will get in touch with you.
